WHAT FIFA SAID ON 6 SEPTEMBER
Reuters reported on 6 September that a FIFA spokesperson confirmed Infantino would stand for re-election in 2027. Referring to his April announcement, the spokesperson said: “Of course, nothing has changed.” Sky Sports independently reported the same FIFA position.
The new development is FIFA’s explicit reaffirmation after the dispute over the withdrawn FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal. This is not a first announcement of candidacy. CONFIRMED applies to the documented spokesperson statement and the earlier public declaration of intent; it does not establish that a nomination has been submitted or formally validated by FIFA.
THE ORIGINAL CONGRESS RECORD
Infantino announced his intention to stand at the 76th FIFA Congress in Vancouver on 30 April 2026. FIFA’s Congress report records that declaration and the planned election at the 77th Congress in Rabat on 18 March 2027. FIFA’s separate presidential article, published on 1 May, records his closing announcement to the member associations.
The speech date and the next-day article date describe different stages of the same original announcement. Neither should be replaced by 6 September as the start of his bid.
THE POLAND CONTEXT
On 5 September, Infantino attended the opening of the U-20 Women’s World Cup in Katowice, Poland. Reuters reported that he declined to discuss whether he regretted events surrounding the abandoned investment proposal and instead emphasised FIFA’s work to develop football. AP reported that he also did not answer questions about resignation or whether he still planned to seek another term.
The spokesperson’s confirmation followed the next day. That sequence does not establish why FIFA issued the clarification or what Infantino intended by declining the earlier questions. The Poland appearance is context for this status update, not a separate candidacy announcement.
THE FIELD AT THIS CHECK
In its 6 September report, Reuters said no challenger had formally announced a candidacy. This is a dated account of the public field, not an official final candidate list. Reports about possible alternatives or approaches to potential candidates do not themselves establish a declaration.

WHAT THIS DOES NOT ESTABLISH
FIFA’s statement does not establish a completed nomination process, an eligibility determination, an uncontested final ballot or an election result. It provides no verified vote total or majority. The president’s intention to stand also creates no new position for any member association, so this entry makes no change to the association-position tracker.
